Maurice Davies

As well as working for the Museum Consultancy, Maurice Davies is a senior research fellow in the Department of Management at King’s College London. He’s widely recognised as an expert in UK museums. He writes regularly on museums, speaks at conferences in the UK and overseas and has often been quoted in the media. He’s an experienced editor, writer, advocate, trainer, facilitator, fundraiser and policy analyst. He works closely with all types of museum people from local-authority leaders to trainees.

He has served on a range of committees and advisory groups including DCMS ministerial advisory panels and, Arts Council England’s external advisory group on museums and libraries. He’s advised charitable trusts on their support for museums, including the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and Esmee Fairbairn Foundation.

Recent areas of interest include: impact and outcomes, sustainability and museums, disposal of collections and other aspects of museum ethics, entry to and diversity of the museum workforce, museum evaluation and helping museums making their case.

He’s been deputy director of the Museums Association, editor of Museums Journal, a curator at Manchester Art Gallery, a Turner Scholar at Tate, and a lecturer at Imperial College. He has a doctorate in art history from the Courtauld Institute and a first degree in pure mathematics from the University of Warwick.
